During their joint press conference, José Manuel Barroso, EC President and Vladimir Putin, Russian Prime Minister, condemned the Libyan government's crackdown on demonstrators and deplored the victims across the Arab world. Talks covered a wide range of issues including trade, energy, human rights and the crisis in North Africa. The leaders welcomed the substantial progress made on the EU-Russia Partnership for Modernization. José Manuel Barroso highlighted the importance of EU-Russian partnership in terms of the human rights. 'Strengthening the rule of law and fundamental freedoms is a shared commitment and we expect Russia to respect its international commitments in the field of human rights', said the EC President. Vladimir Putin also mentioned the visa free regime issue, 'the visa regime is becoming a real impediment on the way towards economic operation and interaction', added Vladimir Putin. The Russian government has held talks with the European Commission every two years since 2004.
