Ржавая старая баржа, названная в честь героя гражданской войны, «Евгений Рунда», а попросту «Е. Рунда», достается Вениамину Шнеерсону за долги. Увидев свое новое «белоснежное судно», Веня решает отправить его на металлолом. На борту баржи собирается команда: старший помощник Громов, старший механик, повариха Рая, матросы, помощник старшего механика Скиба. Команде не хватает только капитана. Волей случая в порт попадает молодой человек Олег, которому Веня предлагает возглавить экипаж. Олег, оказавшись в безвыходной ситуации, соглашается. В это время в городе боцман Головацкий собирается жениться на своей любимой Ларе, но в порыве ревности оставляет молодую невесту прямо перед дворцом бракосочетаний, а сам отправляется в порт, где его, абсолютно пьяного и грустного, «грузит» на борт «Е. Рунды» новая команда. Последней на сухогруз попадает молодая дочь Громова — Настя. В качестве профилактики отец запирает ее на судне. Тем временем, Вене предлагают заработать: доставить по пути груз в соседний город. Команда отправляется в путешествие.
