A short video about our trip to the Jungfraujoch, a building set at over 3500 metres above sea-level in the Swiss Alps in between the Eiger and the Jungfrau. We left London by Eurostar at 7:22 am for Paris where we changed over to Gare de l'Est (about 5 minutes walk) to catch the 14:51 to Strasbourg. We grabbed some lunch at Strasbourg before getting on the 17:01 to Interlaken. At Interlaken we stayed at the excellent City Hotel Oberland, a three star hotel in the city centre, but before it was light the next morning we were already on the train to Lauterbrunnen to start our way up to the Jungfraujoch. By 08:30 we were at Lauterbrunnen to catch the 09:14 for Kleine Scheidegg where we would catch our last leg train to the top of Europe. Kleine Scheidegg is where mountain climbers would get off to climb the Eiger. Finally at 10:22 we arrived at the Jungfraujoch, the final part of a highly impressive engineering project begun over 100 years ago. Anyone attempting it today would be considered mad! We were especially fortunate from the weather point of view as there was little wind and no low clouds which enabled me to take some great views of the mountain range. Winds can reach 240 km / hour up here, but even on the relatively warm day we had it was -5 Celsius. Most shocking was the absence of snow. The ski fields below are clearly marked out by the white dots where the snow cannons are situated. No real snow was forecast either for at least a week. Choose your time to visit ...

Interlaken, one of the Alps' original resorts, is a useful springboard for alpine thrills. And, when the famous peaks get socked in by clouds, you can choose from some interesting lowland options. In the Bernese Oberland area of Switzerland lie three large peaks, the Eiger, the Monch and the Jungfrau (Ogre, Monk and Virgin). On the shoulder between the Jungfrau and the Monch is the Jungfraujoch. Accessed by railway via the heart of the Eiger it is home to the Sphinx observatory and research station. At 3454m it also offers good views of the upper mountain environment as well as the surrounding area. Cut deep inside the ice of the shoulder is a large palace, home to the Jungfrau.....?

Breathtaking 360° panorama view from the Jungfrau region including "big three" Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau, taken at "Kleine Scheidegg". The Kleine Scheidegg ("minor watershed") is a high mountain pass (2061 m / 6762 ft) located below the famous Eiger North Face in the Bernese Oberland, Switzerland. It reveals a spectacular view on the Jungfrau region, including the "big three" Eiger (3970 m / 13026 ft), Mönch (4107 m / 13475 ft) and Jungfrau (4158 m / 13642 ft). The Kleine Scheidegg hosts a railway station of the Jungfrau Railway, a pioneer of all mountain railways. The Jungfrau Railway runs within the Eiger and Mönch up to the Jungfraujoch (3454 m / 11333 ft), Europe's highest altitude railway station. The Jungfrau Region has a UNESCO World Heritage site - the first in the Alps, with numerous mountain lakes, rivers, streams, cascading waterfalls, glaciers (including the Aletsch Glacier, at 22 kilometres / 14 miles, the longest in the Alps) and peaks (including Jungfrau, Top of Europe). The climate ranges from Mediterranean to Arctic.
