If you're not sure what we mean by the game "Telephone", it's the party game where you whisper something in someone's ear, then they whisper it in someone else's ear, and so on. The message gets changed over time. If you're playing this game at a party, it probably means it's a pretty lame party. If you turned on the Closed Captions, you may notice that the transcript is significantly different from what we ended up with for each round. That's because each time a video is uploaded, the computer listens to the audio and interprets it fresh. So, even if you upload essentially the same audio, if one small thing changes in your video, the transcript will change, sometimes a lot. It's just a phenomenon associated with the technology. Our scripts from rounds 2 & 3 came from the actual transcripts that were generated when we uploaded those videos. Make sense? YouTube has now released the ability to view closed captions on any video, even if they did not upload a transcript. This software is based on Google's speech recognition technologies. It appears that the closed captions take either several minutes to appear after that video has been uploaded onto YouTube. 'On hold' song: "Hello, is it me you're looking for?" by Lionel Richie. Update: The Basta guys are unstoppable. On Jan 17, they unveiled a 6 month undercover operation on the producers of nightly call-in "quizzes". This demonstrated what everybody suspected for years, ie that they are a scam. The authorities weren't able (or willing) to ban them. The day after Basta's broadcast , the games were cancelled. On Jan 24, they went after SABAM, a Belgian artists rights and copyright collective. Having safely completed over 200000 miles of computer-led driving, we wanted to share one of our favorite moments. Here's Steve, who joined us for a special drive on a carefully programmed route to experience being behind the wheel in a whole new way. We organized this test as a technical experiment, but we think it's also a promising look at what autonomous technology may one day deliver if rigorous technology and safety standards can be met. There are different ways of explaining these sounds, and not all will agree with my explanations. There can be arguments over which sounds we are combining. I note, for example, that some say we should end with /ɪ/ or /ʊ/ with these three diphthongs. I liked Rebecca Dauer's explanation that says we move towards /i/ or /u/. I like the concept of approaching a sound. It supports the idea of a glide. Also, many say we start with /æ/ or /ɔ/, but again, I preffered a different explanation. I think of /ɑ/ as a general starting point. The tongue for /ɑ/ may be more forward than usual, though. A very strong "Ow!" indeed starts with /æ ...
