Бали (Bali), остров в Малайском архипелаге, самый западный из М. Зондских островов, в Индонезии. Площадь 5,6 тыс. км2. Население около 1,8 млн. чел. (1961). Основные города: Сингараджа, Денпасар. Остров горист, наиболее высок на В., где расположен вулкан Агунг высотой 3142 м. Берега круты, мало изрезаны, только на Ю. отделяется более крупный полуостров. Климат тропический, муссонный, с обильными летними осадками (1500 мм в год и более) и очень сухой зимой. Покрыт тропическими лесами (пальмы, тиковое дерево). Плантационное хозяйство (рис, кофе, какао). Б. - старинный центр индонезийской культуры ("остров тысячи храмов") и народного искусства (танец, резьба по дереву, кости, камню и рогу, маски, утварь, ювелирные изделия, ткани с богатой расцветкой, плетение из пальмового листа, бамбука и трав). Архитектурные памятники: "Королевские могилы" (11 в.) - высеченные в скалах фасады; "Слоновая пещера" (около 13 в.) с резным фасадом и фонтанной скульптурой; многочисленные храмы ("пура") с террасными дворами, богато украшенными воротами и ярусными башнями. Скульптура Б. (фигуры людей и животных) отличается свободой, живостью и разнообразием тем, живопись (современные художники - А. А. Г. Собрат, И. Б. Маде) - декоративной узорностью, идилличностью образов, где человеческие фигуры сливаются с пышно расцветающей природой.
