We've noticed that people don't have any idea what (or where) we're talking about when we mention that we recently traveled to Chernobyl & Pripyat. Pripyat is a completely modern abandoned city about 2km from Chernobyl, inside of the Chernobyl exclusion zone, in Ukraine. Over 20 years ago (26 April, 1986), there was an accident in one of the nuclear reactors there that became one of the worst technological disasters in history. We got some really fantastic footage of both cities as well as the reactor. When we put the film together, we thought it would be helpful to include some information about what happened. Pripyat (1999) Documentary English subtitles added View video index photo www.chnpp.info The settlement of Pripyat is five kilometers from the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. Its population numbered 50000 until 1986. Today, Pripyat is a heavily guarded and highly contaminated ghost town in the center of the radioactive zone, which extends from Ukraine deep into Belarus. The villages were evacuated for the most part. Whoever wants to penetrate the barbed-wire fence surrounding the zone needs special permits, and those who wish to leave are checked for radioactive contamination. PRIPYAT is also the name of the river which flows past the power plant and into the Dnieper. It is still the source of fish for Zone residents. The 30-km Zone is fenced in with barbed wire. Arbitrarily delineated with a compass, its area does not correspond to the actual contamination of the ground. Although living inside the Zone is still prohibited, homeless have taken advantage of its size, which makes effective patrols impossible. Militiamen stationed at the border check all those who wish to enter the Zone. Taking food or other materials out of the Zone is prohibited. Approximately 15000 people work in rotation in the Zone - at the power plant (Unit 3 is still in operation) or in laboratories where the effects of radioactivity on plants and animals are measured. 25 years have passed since the Chernobyl disaster, but people still remember the tragedy, especially those who lived in the nearby city of Pripyat. The town was not immediately evacuated after the incident, and the general population of the Soviet Union was not informed of the disaster until a few days later. The evacuation began at 14:00 on April 27. To speed things up, residents were told to only take the bare necessities, as the authorities said it would only last about three days. As a result, most of the residents left behind their personal belongings, which are still there to this day. RT's correspondent Aleksey Yaroshevsky has visited the ghost town.
