Сом обыкновенный (лат. silurus glanis) — крупная пресноводная бесчешуйчатая рыба семейства сомовые (Siluridae) отряда сомообразные. Длина тела до 5 м, вес до 300 кг (по непроверенным данным, возможно, и более). Анальный плавник длинный, жировой плавник отсутствует, непарные плавники не имеют шипов. Обитает в реках и озёрах Европейской части России, кроме бассейна Ледовитого океана. Обычен в Западной Европе и в бассейне Аральского моря. Икрометание весной в прибрежной зоне среди водной растительности.
